There are many factors that contribute to belly fat, so when you are trying to fight it you must follow all of the rules discussed below. First, you need to look at what you are putting into your body. Are you eating right? If you are not eating right you are bound to end up with a layer of fat over your abs. This hides the layer of muscle underneath that you have worked so hard at building. Consider having your body fat measured by a trainer at the gym or by your doctor to find out if you are in the healthy range. If you are above the healthy range then this may be the culprit of your Abs being hidden. If this is the case, then you need to up your cardio time as part of your exercise to lose belly fat. You can accomplish this by doing anything that gets your heart rate up.
So maybe you don’t have a high body fat percentage, maybe you just aren’t doing the stomach exercises correctly and you haven’t actually been able to build up the muscle yet. When you are doing crunches, you should only be able to do about 25 in a row if you are doing them correctly. If regular crunches seem like they are too easy of an exercise to lose belly fat, try moving your feet out a little further away from your body, or raising them and doing crunches with them raised. When you do crunches, your chin should not be close to your chest, but your head should be back (you should be able to pretend like you are holding an apple between your chin and chest). Look up at the ceiling when you are doing crunches, do not look at your knees. These tips should help you correct your exercise to lose body fat, but if you still aren’t sure you are using proper form, grab a trainer and ask them to watch you do a few repetitions.
If you think that you have been eating well and doing your crunches correctly but still aren’t seeing the results that you want you may be facing a genetic issue. The problem may not even be the exercise that you have been doing to lose belly fat. Yes, that’s right…some people are just born without flat abs. Look at your parents, if they are at a healthy weight but still have belly bulges, you might have inherited the gene. This doesn’t mean that you should stop exercising your abs all together though, they may not look flat as a board, but you will still see much improvement.
After sifting through each one of these issues and assessing your situation, you may still not be satisfied. If this is the case you may need to begin training your abs a different way. You can always try the abdominal machine at your gym that you can add weight too or you can add a dumbbell to your chest while doing regular crunches. Ask a friend who has great abs what they do for exercise and you may just get some great new ideas. Lastly, do not be too hard on yourself, you may have flatter abs than you think!
